Gilman International Scholarship October 2024 Recipients

January 8, 2025 | UConn Global News

The Gilman Scholarship, a prestigious academic award congressionally funded through the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs at the State Department, has been awarded to eight UConn students for the current application cycle.

Eligibility for the Gilman Scholarship requires undergraduate students to be Pell Grant-eligible United States citizens who plan to study abroad for academic credit through a program approved by their home institution. Supporting students with high financial need provides access to students who are historically underrepresented in study abroad, including first-generation college students, STEM majors, ethnic and racial minority students, students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students, and others who experience barriers to participation.

Students applying for Gilman Scholarships work with advisors in UConn’s Office of National Scholarships & Fellowships (ONSF) and Experiential Global Learning (EGL). Upon their return from studying abroad, each Gilman Scholar is required to complete a service project in their campus or home community with the goal of sharing the value of participation in study abroad and promoting the scholarship to prospective students. Applications are reviewed with consideration for the proposed follow-up service project.

This cycle, the students below were selected as Gilman Scholars. These students share their reasons for studying abroad, how this award will further their education and share advice with prospective students.

Nicholas Bendas

Nicholas Benda ’25 (CLAS)

Major: Maritime Studies
Hometown: Preston, Connecticut
Program Name & Term Year: Universidad San Francisco de Quito: Ecosystems and Biodiversity in the Galapagos, Winter 2025
Program Location: Islas Galápagos, Ecuador

Why are you interested in Experiential Global Learning and pursuing your education abroad?
I am a maritime studies student, but I have never been abroad before. I have spent my entire life in New England and believe that time studying in the Galapagos will allow me to see the maritime world in a new way.

How will you use the Gilman Scholarship to further your education?
The Gilman Scholarship will make the tuition for my time in the Galapagos much more affordable. I also hope it will open other doors for me in the future. For example, I am applying for a Fulbright Grant after graduation and, if I am selected for an interview, I think this experience will make me more competitive.

What advice would you give students interested in studying abroad or applying to the Gilman Scholarship?
I recommend talking about things that would make you a unique candidate when writing your essays. For example, I talked about my experiences as a non-traditional student that had never gone abroad before. You also want to talk about how the program of your choice relates to your goals, academically or otherwise. Finally, think about the connections you can make between your host country and the United States; what institutions or communities in both countries could you bring together? Do not limit yourself to academic or career related connections. Talk about your volunteer experiences, your artistic interests, the sports you play, or other personal interests that would let you connect with people in your host country.

Alexandra Bradley

Alexandra Bradley ’25 (CLAS)

Major: English
Hometown: Tolland, Connecticut
Program Name & Term Year: ISA Paris: L’Institut Catholique de Paris, Spring 2025
Program Location: Paris, France

Why are you interested in Experiential Global Learning and pursuing your education abroad?
I have lived in Tolland for my entire life, and then I went to college only ten minutes away from my house. I haven’t really gotten the chance to go out and explore in the world. I’ve always wanted to travel and spend time in Europe, and I’m really excited to learn about new cultures and perspectives.

How will you use the Gilman Scholarship to further your education?
I’ve been studying French since I was twelve years old. I can communicate, but I’ve never had the chance to experience true immersion. This scholarship can help me afford tuition and cover the cost of living in France, which would otherwise be incredibly difficult to do.

What advice would you give students interested in studying abroad or applying to the Gilman Scholarship?
The best piece of writing advice that I received was that you should try not to sound like a tourist in your essay. Focus on how this will help not just your education, but how your experiences in another country can enrich the people around you as well. In terms of planning advice, start your essays ahead of time if you can. The deadline really snuck up on me and I found myself rushing to complete it, which was especially difficult while trying to stay on top of coursework. You will also want to run your essays by the Gilman advisors more than a week before the deadline because I missed my chance to have their eyes on my paper! You can also get essay help from the writing center.
